The preciousness of Xiangyunsha lies in its natural endowment—often described as "half-crafted by Heaven"—and its irreplicable regional DNA. The four essential elements required to dye Xiangyunsha are inextricably linked to the unique soil and water of the Lingnan region.

The pretreated white fabric of Xiangyunsha originates from the silvopasture "Mulberry dike-fish pond" (Sang-ji-yu-tang) ecological cycle, characterized by "lush mulberry trees, robust silkworms, fertile ponds, and plump fish." This fabric is the biological transformation of mulberry leaves by silkworms, possessing inherent natural attributes of breathability and skin-friendliness.

One of the primary dyes used in the finishing process, Dioscorea cirrosa is a vine harvested from the deep mountains of Lingnan. The tannic acid contained in its juice allows for dyeing without any chemical additives. The closed-loop process of "harvesting – juicing – dyeing/sun-drying – returning residues to nature" epitomizes ecological wisdom.

Owing to the unique geographical environment at latitudes 22°N to 23°N, the river mud in Shunde is exceptionally rich in iron and other trace elements. This allows for a thorough reaction with tannins, serving as the critical catalyst in the "Guo Wu" (mud-coating) stage to generate the signature lustrous black coating of Xiangyunsha. The "geographical fingerprint" in river mud is critical and not to be artificially replicated anywhere else.

The intense sunlight and high temperatures required for the sun-dyeing process (Shai-liang) are most abundant in the southernmost part of Guangdong, the heart of Lingnan. Governed by the climatic rhythms of the region, skilled craftsmen must wait for the perfect timing (Tian-shi) to allow the shuliang juice, river mud, and silk to complete their slow fusion.

This reverence for and adaptation to nature by the people of Guangdong is a vivid practice of the traditional Chinese philosophy of "Harmony between Heaven and Humanity" (Tian-ren-he-yi) within the handicraft industry. It elevates Xiangyunsha beyond the realm of ordinary fabric, making it a living testimony to the symbiotic prosperity between man and nature.

Around 1553, after the Portuguese established a leasehold in Macau, foreign merchant ships began to enter the region in succession. Macau emerged as a major transshipment port for foreign trade, significantly boosting the export of raw silk from Guangdong. The high demand for raw silk at the time accelerated the rapid development of the sericulture industry. Through long-term practice in planting mulberry trees and raising silkworms, farmers in Shunde and neighboring areas discovered that silkworm excrement (silkworm sand) served as excellent feed for pond fish. To maximize land utility, farmers dug deep fish ponds and raised the surrounding embankments to create "dike fields." They planted mulberry trees on these dikes and raised fish in the deep ponds.

This formed a complete energy-flow ecosystem: Mulberry leaves on the dikes feed the silkworms → Silkworms produce cocoons for silk reeling → Silkworm excrement, pupae, and reeling wastewater feed the fish → Fish droppings fertilize the mulberry trees. A well-known proverb in the Pearl River Delta states, "Lush mulberry, robust silkworms, and fat fish; fertile ponds, good dikes, and abundant cocoons," which vividly illustrates the interconnectedness of each stage in this circular production process.

Consequently, this unique production method of "Mulberry Dike-Fish Pond" gradually took shape through long-term practical experience and rapidly spread throughout the Pearl River Delta. Its development not only promoted mulberry cultivation, sericulture, and fish farming but also drove progress in processing industries such as silk reeling. Over time, it evolved into a comprehensive and scientific man-made ecological system.
